Hi all.
My son is newly diagnosed with a peanut allergy, when tested did not react to other tree nuts, just peanut.
I wonder if anyone can recommend places we can eat out... we have done macdonalds, kfc, zizzi's and the local chippy.
I read on here that Pizza Hut has now gone Nut free, but I have also read that people have had reactions there, and I am unclear about if this was BEFORE or after they went nut free?!
I am new to this, and although just peanuts being the allergen it doesn't make it any easier as everyone just says 'may contain nuts' without actually stipulating which!! I'm sure it is a frustration for everyone.
I want my son's life to be as normal as possible but don't want to put him at risk.
His initial reaction was to a curry sauce with peanuts in, his face swelled, and his lips, and he had a rash, but no swelling of tongue or throat. |

Hi Victoria,
Welcome to the forum. I don't think Pizza Hut has gone nut free. I think that only some of their pizzas are listed in the allergy guide as not having a risk of cross contamination. There is an Allergy Guide on Pizza Hut's UK website.
This is the page: http://www.pizzahut.co.uk/restaurants/menus--deals/dietary-information.aspx
Then you click on "agree" and it takes you to the Allergy Guide.
http://www.pizzahut.co.uk/media/77460/dietary_requirements-1009.pdf
You will see that some items in the peanuts and tree nuts columns are marked with a C. This means that the allergen is present in the manufacturing site/factory/supply chain and therefore it could pose a slight risk of cross-contamination with the product.
There is also this disclaimer: "NB: We have taken all reasonable steps to ensure that this table is accurate. However, due to the risk of unexpected inclusion and possible product substitution of product we unfortunately cannot guarantee that the specifically identified products do not contain 'nuts' &/or ingredients derived from 'nuts'. Your statutory rights are not affected."
As for places to eat out, my son always has the margherita pizza at Ask. Their menu specifies which dishes contain nuts, which are usually pine nuts, not peanuts. From experience at the different Ask restaurants we have been to, I find that staff have been accommodating to my son's allergy and aware of cross contamination issues.

Always make sure you are on the country-specific website as the allergy info can differ. I'm from Canada and I live in the UK and I always have to check the UK sites.
You will find that there are no "safe" restaurants, unless they are specifically marketed to be allergy-free (I only know of a handful of these types of restaurants and they are in Canada and the US). You will always need to check ingredients and speak to staff about cross-contamination in order to make an informed decision. McDonald's is always an easy option though. Pizza Hut should be fine as long as you check the list and order the pizzas with peanut/nut free dough and toppings... as well as inform staff about cross contamination issues. In time, you will feel more confident about eating out and will have become familiar with places to eat and ways to communicate the allergy. _________________ 12-year-old son: allergic to peanuts, nuts and raw egg whites |

A friend of mine had a terrible experience when her other half ordered ice cream from Dominos and it had nuts in caramel in it. This was over a year ago so I don't know if they still sell it and I certainly buy the pizzas but just a warning that maybe not all the desserts are OK... _________________ Angela Russell

Dominos used to use nuts as an ingredient but took off all those items with nuts in them. We started to eat there when their food labelling became much better - and now we have seen they are partners with the anaphylaxis campaign it gives us a little more confidence in their food.
We eat in Dominos and McD's for fast food but go to more expensive restaurants for 'nice' meals. We tend to spend more but it's worth it to help us relax and enjoy the occasion.
Our best experience was Raymond Blanc's restaurant - a very special occasion and the other half had a fantastic time! He got special chocolates after the meal made for him and we didn't worry one little bit - don't think we'll be going there anytime soon but it was worth it as a once in a lifetime opportunity! |

Does anyone eat at KFC? We used to regularly before the diagnosis and never had a reaction but are a bit nervous to now. _________________ Peanut, tree nut, (and raw fruit and veg) mum |

'Nut Allergy
None of our products contain nuts as an ingredient, however some of our manufacturers produce products containing nuts on the same production site. Due to the possible cross contamination risk we cannot declare that our products are free from nuts or their derivatives.'
To be pragmatic, if you've been eating there regularly without a problem pre-diagnosis then nothing has changed. Their warning indicates a low level of risk, but it depends on how comfortable you are with 'may contains'.
Me, I would avoid, but that is largely due to an aversion to the taste sensation that is KFC ;p _________________ Nothing in this post should be construed as medical advice. |

Another favourite thing pre diagnosis was going out for mugs of drinking chocolate. I asked Costa today and they checked their allergy list. They are may contain but the sprinkle chocolate is cadburys so suggested that we ask for chocolate to be made with the cadburys sprinkle rather than the costa chocolate.
Does anyone else take their children out for drinking chocolate or not risk it? _________________ Peanut, tree nut, (and raw fruit and veg) mum |

| Tbh we don't go to any cafes or restaurants now except Macdonalds. When we were on holiday last year at Center Parcs i did think about getting jamie a strawberry frappucino (sp) at Starbucks and had a long chat with the staff and looked at the ingredients. But Jamie was worried and we didn't bother. He knows risks so well know and it is hard to persuade him that something is safe. Bless. |

My son has a peanut and tree nut allergy and had a reaction after eating popcorn chicken on Friday he's never reacted to their foods before but it's now off limits. |

Thank you so much for the warning. We have had kfc twice post diagnosis but will now steer clear! |
